Payroll Technician

Reports To: Sr. Director, Human Resources & Payroll Compliance

Location: Salinas, CA

Pay Range: $23 + DOE


SUMMARY 

The Payroll Technician will be responsible for ensuring that all payroll processes are executed appropriately and in a timely manner. This individual manages effective internal/external client relationships within own area of responsibility and builds client relationships in the wider group or unit.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintains payroll information by collecting, calculating, and entering data.

  • Provides payroll information by answering questions and requests.

  • Encourages employee confidence and protects payroll operations by keeping information confidential.

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of wage and hour laws and regulations in order to efficiently process payroll.

  • Updates records by reviewing and entering changes in exemptions, insurance changes, deductions, paid-time not worked, status, and pay; calculating vacation earned.

  • Meets payroll operational standards by contributing information to strategic plans and reviews; implementing production, productivity, quality, and customer-service standards; resolving problems; identifying system improvements.

  • Meets payroll financial standards by providing weekly reports; identifying variances; implementing corrective actions.

  • Prepares pay by verifying time records; calculating and producing checks or electronic transfers.

  • Balances payroll accounts by auditing information; identifying and resolving discrepancies.

  • Determines payroll liabilities by entering federal and state income and social security tax information, 401k transfer and direct deposits, wage assignments and garnishments.

  • Fulfills wage garnishment requirements by completing forms; adjusting payroll records, documenting and transmitting withholdings; negotiating with collection agencies to convert garnishments to wage assignments.

  • Accomplishes organization goals by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.

  • Ability to work occasional Saturdays and evenings

  • Performs other duties as assigned

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one to three years related experience and/or training

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel preferred

  • Valid California Driver License

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred

REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent verbal and communication skills

  • Excellent time management, customer service and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work well under deadlines, pay attention to detail and produce thorough accurate work.

  • Ability to perform computations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division correctly; Solve practical problems by choosing appropriately from a variety of mathematical techniques such as formulas and percentages.
