Safety Risk Manager

Reports to: V.P. of Human Resources

Location: San Juan Bautista, CA and Yuma, AZ

Salary Range: $100k


GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB: The Safety/Risk Manager will work in partnership with Human Resources, Production, Maintenance, Procurement, Quality Assurance, Food Safety, R&D, Shipping and Receiving to eliminate or control hazardous conditions resulting from human error, equipment and machine operations, which may lead to human injury and/or property damage. The Safety/Risk Manager will also be responsible for plant security.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works in partnership with Human Resources, and all other departments within the organization to reduce and manage risk exposure at workplace resulting from human behavior, equipment and machines operating procedures and conditions, which may lead to work related injuries and/or property damage.
  • Develops and implements safety policies and procedures including the Injury and Illness Prevention Program in compliance with local, state, and federal Occupational safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and other government agencies’ rules and regulations.
  • Assists in identification, analysis and control of occupational hazards. Implements safety programs specific to employee needs to promote a healthy and safety culture in the workforce including necessary training and follow-up.
  • Develops and implements safety-training program for all employees.
  • Develops and delivers leadership in safety training courses for management and executive team.
  • Prepares studies and analysis of industrial accident causes and hazards to health and utilizes for developing focused training programs to address problem areas.
  • Develops and implements hazard identification and tracking system that monitors identified work risk exposure and proactively correct before an injury take place.
  • Conducts Job Safety Analysis for all job functions.
  • Develops and implements standard operating procedures for most critical tasks.
  • Implements and maintains behavioral based safety culture with total involvement of management team.
  • Actively involved with workers compensations claim reviews and other related matters.
  • Address any problems, which may arise between medical provider and employer.

  • Develops and implements return to work program to reduce workers compensation costs.
  • Maintains the management members informed of recent Cal-Osha or other governing agency updates and or changes which may have a direct effect on the company.
  • Conducts incident/accident investigations. Develops a safety reference library.
  • Implements and leads safety committee.
  • Develops and implements safety incentive program.
  • Organizes the investigation of catastrophic accidents and injuries and cooperates in the preparation of material and evidence for organization use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations.
  • Represents the Company in community or industry safety groups and programs.
  • Monitors submission of accident reports required by regulatory agencies.
  • Provides information, signs, poster, barriers, and other material to personnel to warn of potential and actual safety hazards and to prevent access to hazardous conditions.
  • Assists with transportation of injured workers to medical providers.
  • Responsible for the perimeter security of the plants and the safety of employees, customers, vendors, visitors.
  • Organizes, trains, and plans for plant evacuation having full mock evacuations annually.
  • Interprets and leads leading and lagging indicators.
  • Utilizes and customizes analytic data related to work related incidents by department to reduce frequency and severity rates.
  • Develops and implements safety key process indicators.
  • Develops annual safety analysis and strategy to systematically lower safety index and create growth on safety culture.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Yes, supervises safety staff

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, or a related field and ten (10) years of experience working in safety roles.
  • Willing to accept Five years of experience in a safety role in lieu of a bachelor’s degree and ten (10) years of experience working in safety roles
  • Experience in safety roles must include 5 years of experience as an EHS Manager and 5 years of experience working in the agricultural industry and employee relations.
  • Must also have experience in the following: Implementing safety management systems; Behavior based safety, Chemical hazard communication, Contractor safety, Confined space entry, Electrical safety, Emergency response planning, Ergonomics, Fall protection, PSM - Process safety Management NH3 Refrigeration, Hazardous energy control - Lock Out Tag Out, Hearing conservation, Incident investigation, Injury reporting and analysis, Job hazard analysis and risk assessments, Machine guarding and pre-start equipment assessments, Personal protective equipment, Powered industrial vehicles, SAFETY Programs, awareness, and OSHA Compliance, Solid and hazardous waste management, MP - Risk Management Program NH3 Refrigeration, Wastewater and storm water management, permitting and controls, Pollution prevention and resource conservation.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

 

Very High Skills: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Must poses valid CA driver’s license and be insurable

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Read, Write & Speak Spanish
  • Must be able to relocate to our different processing

COMPUTER SKILLS:

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), web-based applications

 

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

Have at least 5 years’ experience working in the agricultural industry and employee relations.

 EQUIPMENT USED:

Automobile, computer, printer and all office environment equipment.
