LETTUCE MARKETS STRONG THROUGH SALINAS DEAL- The Packer

A perfect storm of weather, higher demand and other deals winding down is pushing up California lettuce prices, and they could stay high until production begins to shift in October.

Unseasonable weather began accelerating plant growth in July, and a spate of unfavorable conditions — mainly heat, but also rain — in September has affected quality and lowered yields in the Salinas Valley, said Jason Lathos, commodities manager for Salinas, Calif.-based Church Brothers LLC.
