Steve Church, CEO of Church Brothers Produce, has seen the produce industry grow, innovate and thrive in the Salinas Valley.

"It's amazing what this industry has done," he said during an interview at company's offices on Portola Drive. "When I first started working in the business (in the mid-1960s) we were harvesting 640 cartons (of lettuce) per acre. Today, we're averaging 1,050 but up to 1,300 cartons per acre."

Coupled with innovative harvesting and packing methods, Church Brothers Produce (founded in 1999 by Steve and his brother, Tom Church) has become an industry leader.

The company grows iceberg lettuce, romaine lettuce, green leaf lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, celery and green onions. It also contracts with growers that grow tender leaf lettuce, spinach, spring mix, arugula, cilantro, parsley and kale — even strawberries in Santa Maria.

It takes a staff of more than 1,000 people to manage, harvest and process that large mix of products, grown in Salinas, Yuma, Arizona and Mexico.

Produce has been a mainstay for the Church family for decades. Steve and Tom, 71, were pretty much born into the business. Their father Sid Church was an attorney and founded the Salinas law firm of Abramson, Church & Stave. While Sid, who died in 1952, wasn't in the produce business, he acted as an attorney for many produce companies and wrote the bylaws for the Grower-Shipper Association.
